The UN Resource Center at Faculty of International Relations of KazNU, together “New Silk Way” program, and in cooperation with the UN Information Center in Kazakhstan organized a mini-model United Nations meeting dedicated to the 70-year anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The program consisted of the sessions of the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly, dedicated to enhancing international cooperation in countering terrorism and protecting the human rights of refugees. Students of the al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Kazakh University of International Relations and World Languages, Kazakh-German University, and other higher education institutions modelled the work of the two high bodies of the United Nations.
The Dean of the faculty of international relations of the Kazakh National University, Doctor of Law Professor Sagyngali Aidarbayev opened the session and welcomed the participants. He was joined by Dr. Rafis Abazov – Director of the Ban Ki-Moon Institute for Sustainable Development Professor and Dr. Sanoj Rajan – Affiliate Expert with Harvard Humanitarian Initiative at Harvard University, Massachusetts, USA.
The UN representatives – Mr. Vlastimil Samek – Representative of UN Department of Public Information, Mr. Ryszard Komenda – Regional Representative for Central Asia of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms. Assel Shepetova and Ms. Alexandra Kruglova – representatives of UNHCR, and Mr. Abdurahim Muhidov – UN Information Center in Kazakhstan welcomed the Model UN participants and commended on the initiative.
The successful modelling of the sessions and the most active participants have been awarded by the UNHCR office in Almaty; the UN Resource Center presented all participants with certificates of appreciation.
Among the goals of the Model UN – New Silk Way program is focusing on global issues in a variety of areas, enhancement of civil initiatives in protection of human rights and coordination among UN structures. The Model UN aims at seeking constructive resolving of global issues with participation of students and youth and is one of most interesting and innovational projects.
